SUMMER 2017 TOUR

We're beyond excited to announce our summer headlining tour!

Joining us on the tour will be Vasudeva and Head North. Tickets for the tour are on sale now, and links to purchase can be found on our dates page.

A few notes - this is our first headlining tour since we stopped self-booking our own tours. We know it doesn't cover the whole US, or the whole world...we know we won't be able to play for some of you on this run, and we're sorry about that and hope to make it up to you some day. To those who can make it, we're just beyond excited to be able to play more songs, deeper cuts, and long-requested tracks for you, and to be able to incorporate more elements into our live show than ever before.

On top of that, we're honored to have Vasudeva and Head North coming out to support us on this run. If there was ever a Gates tour you didn't want to miss, well this would be it!

Can't wait to see you all out on the road!

Dates with Chon/Headlining shows

While we're out on the road with The Dear Hunter, we'll be playing some headlining shows as well as some dates with Chon headlining. If we're not stopping by your area with TDH, we might be on one of these dates, so check it out and grab tickets.

Utah

As we got into Utah, we were notified by the promoter that the show was going to be canceled since Pianos was still broken down in California. We were really bummed that Pianos weren't having any luck with their situation and that there was a possibility that more shows would be canceled. Since we were under the impression that we had a day off now, we decided to make the best of it and explore the Bonneville Slat Flats while we were in the area. It's the first time we were all able to see it as a group, Mike and Dan came out here a few years ago to photograph the album artwork for " You Are All You Have Left to Fear." After wandering around for a bit, we got a call from our friends in Nora Dates, a band we've played with before in SLC, and they told us they had a practice space where the venue could be moved to. Loma was on board and Cult Leader was just getting back into town from GodCity Studios and hopped on the show as well. The show ended up being really cool even though everything was a last minute scramble. We're so grateful to have such resourceful friends and dedicated bands to help out in such situations.

Most importantly, we got to stop at out favorite breakfast spot Sill's Cafe on the way out, we all ate gigantic scones smothered and covered with honey butter, as usual.

California

We started off our California run in Anaheim at the Chain Reaction, which has quickly become one of our favorite places to play. Before we got to the show, Kevin was having some gear issues with his 2x12 cab, so he opened it up and saw that one of the speakers had a loose connection. Lucas, the engineer at Chain Reaction and an employee at Bad Cat Amplifiers, helped out with the issue and soldered the connection. Despite the technical issues, the show turned out to be one of the best of this tour. We got to hang with Ray Harkins, the vocalist of Taken, who interviewed Kevin for his Podcast .

In West Hollywood we got some time to hang with our buddy Drew, who has been kind enough to host us every time we come out to the area. We were really stoked we were able to check out Hancock Park nearby which had the La Brea Tar Pits, a good field for frisbee, and a bunch of food trucks. The show later that night was great, despite the $40 parking for the van and trailer, and it was easily one of the coolest rooms/stages that we've played on, the Roxy definitely lives up to its reputation. Shout out to Jake Round for hanging out and buying us some drinks at the bar!

Our last show in California was at 924 Gilman in Berkeley California. We've always heard such great things about this legendary venue and we certainly were not disappointed. The turnout was amazing and it was the first time we got to play with our buddies in the American Scene in a few years. We were swigging some "Refreshing White" Wine (Franzia of course) with the other bands, and we kept the party going at the Pure Noise office with Pianos. Unfortunately the next morning they had to deal with a dead battery followed by a blown transmission on Donner Pass later on in the day.

The Southwest

Between Denver and Colorado Springs, we had some extra time and thought we'd pull off the highway to find a good vantage point to check out Pike's Peak. First, we ended up in a park, where we tossed the signature Gates Frisbee around a bit. After Mike referenced this thing called "Google" to check out where we were, we ended up at the Garden of the Gods, not really knowing what we were getting into.

It ended up being really beautiful, and a great use of our time. According to our tour guide Ethan Koozer, the structures and rocks here are left over from the ancestral Rocky Mountains. It's definitely a fantastic sight, as some of the spires are so thin it's hard to believe they can stand on their own.

We also checked out Balanced Rock, which was a huge boulder balancing on a foot-wide piece of stone. It was a bit terrifying crawling underneath it.

The shows in Colorado Springs, Albuquerque, and Scottsdale were awesome, and last night we played the Chain Reaction for the second time. That place is so cool, and is one of the last places left as far as we can tell that reminds us of the old days. It's so cool to see so many people come out strictly for the music and nothing else. The response to Pianos' set alone gave me chills, to hear everyone singing along so loudly was an incredible feeling.

We're hanging in Los Angeles today with our buddy Drew, and then playing the Roxy tonight in West Hollywood. More updates as we go!

Day Off - Boulder, CO

Yesterday, we had a day off which we spent in Boulder, Colorado. It was an eventful day to say the least.

King found something in Walgreen's that's really going to blow you away.

King found something in Walgreen's that's really going to blow you away.

After getting up and eating some ridiculous donuts, and checking out a Walgreens to stock up on some antacids for Arms, Ethan's friend Steve met up and we all packed into the van to head over to the Flat Iron Mountains for some sightseeing and light hiking.

We filled the van up and decided that now might be the time to restock on liquor since we dried up a few days ago and I mean, it's tour you know? This is when the day got a little crazy. We were aimlessly driving around a parking lot/middle America strip mall area when we rounded the corner adjacent to a Kohl's. At this point, we see a man with some sort of scarf wrapped around his face running across the parking lot, carrying what appears to be a purse, and two older women attempting to chase him down but losing ground fast.

Somebody deduced that this guy had stolen one of the women's purses, and we just all instantly made a snap decision to pull the van over as quickly as possible and try to chase this guy down. Arms pulled the van over with a quickness and everyone piled out, I (Kevin) was the last out and realized I should probably stay with the still running van. From my vantage point, I see our entire band, Eric our TM and Steve chasing this guy down. King was the first to get to him, and seriously leaped at this guy, grabbed him around the neck and threw him to the ground.

According to them, his face hit the curb pretty hard and messed it up pretty bad. He tried to get up and Arms threw him back to the ground, but no one knew if he had a weapon, so in the interest of everyone's safety and having retrieved the stolen purse, they let him go. He got into a rental van, but a taxi driver who had witnessed the entire thing chased the van down and got the license number.

 Ah, nature.

Ah, nature.

According to the woman, this guy punched her in the face and threw her to the ground to get the purse, so we do not feel the slightest bit bad about messing him up. We were all pretty amped on adrenaline after that, and it was seriously the craziest thing I've ever seen on tour. Hopefully that's some karma for bands everywhere seeing as we're often the target of thieves ourselves.

After that we gathered composure and all headed over to the Flat Iron Mountains to cool off. It was a beautiful sight and a really nice way to spend the rest of the day. We took some awesome pictures and gathered some inspiration from the spot. Arms got some reps in too (planet Earth is his gym).

Tonight, we're playing Colorado Springs for the first time, and then heading south to New Mexico and Arizona. Hopefully we won't have to stop any more crime, but don't test us.

Minnesota, Missouri & Colorado

The past few days have been amazing. Our first time in Minnesota was at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis. We got to hangout and meet so many great people, we were introduced to Nic from New Vintage Amplifiers and talked about potential custom gear orders for our next record. We also got to see our buddy Tyler Habeck who we haven't seen since our first full US Tour which he tour managed  Tiny Moving Parts for. We can't wait to come back through the area!

The Demo St Louis, MO & Subterranean Chicago, Il

image.jpg

Last night we played at the Demo in St Louis for the second time. We had the chance to catch up with our buddies in Foxing while we were in town. It was great seeing them for the first time since our winter tour with them. We traded some demos of new material and Eric was kind enough to take us to the zoo on our day off.

Tonight we'll be back at the Subterranean in Chicago. So stoked to be able to play Chicago again with Pianos!

We began our full US tour with Pianos Become the Teeth and Loma Prieta at the First Unitarian Church in Philly. The show was amazing and we couldn't ask for a better way to kick off this tour. Foxing is another band that we're so excited to join on the road, and a band we've been wanting to tour with for a while. It seems like we keep checking boxes off the wishlist more and more frequently, and for that we're very grateful. To the west coasters, we worked so, so hard on Bloom & Breathe, and we'll be working just as hard to craft a set for this run (and all our upcoming dates) so come join us, we want to see all of your beautiful faces again.

Stay tuned for those headlining dates, and another new song off of Bloom & Breathe will be coming at you shortly!

PBTTdates.jpg

We seriously couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate the release of Bloom & Breathe than to share the stage with these fine bands. We've been itching to play with Frameworks again ever since our U.S. Tour earlier this year, and we met Pianos Become The Teeth in the UK back in 2012 and have been dying to do more shows with them ever since.

We'll be treating the Studio at Webster Hall show as our official album release, so if you're from the NY/NJ area we'd love to see all your smiling, familiar faces as we celebrate the release of this two year long project of ours.

And don't forget, if you can't make these shows, we're playing with BoySetsFire in Amityville and Asbury Park on October 22nd and 23rd!

More touring announcements coming soon for the rest of you all, so stay tuned!
