Parallel Lives out today!

The day has finally arrived and “Parallel Lives” is officially out today!

We wanted to take a moment and just say thank you. We made a record that was exactly what we wanted to make, through and through, and the feedback we heard so far has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. For five people in a band, it can’t get any better than that.

If you love this record as much as we do, please help us spread the word! Even if it’s as simple as a share or posting up a song, it continues to help us more than you know.

On top of that, we get to welcome this album into the world by playing with Thrice and La Dispute tonight, two bands we love and respect. From the basement to here, we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue making music and to share it with so many others.

Thank you, enjoy the record, and see you on the road!

So Long, 2014, and Thank You

Well, we’re here at the end of 2014. What a fantastic year for music, and a fantastic year for the five of us. We started the year hunkered down in the recording studio, creating our first full length album with the brilliant Mike Watts. We embarked on our first two full-US tours, playing a total of 76 shows, many in places we’ve never been before. We played with some of our favorite bands, and made so many life-long friends along the way.

Bloom & Breathe is such an achievement in our lives. We've never worked harder on anything, and to see it on so many of our fan’s top ten lists and to hear such kinds words about it only elevates the special status it holds in our hearts. We thank each and every one of you who purchased the album, enjoyed it, shared it with your friends, and continue to spread the word about us.

We’ve never been more excited about what lies ahead. We hope to meet many more of you throughout 2015 as we plan on touring more than ever, and performing Bloom & Breathe for as many of you as we can. We’ve achieved more than we ever thought possible, and yet our ambition is at an all time high. We have so many ideas we can't wait to see come to fruition.

Here’s to our accomplishments thus far, and to those that lie ahead. Thank you for being part of our journey; as far as we’ve come, it’s only just begun.

Interview: Rock Your Lyrics

I recently did an interview with Rock Your Lyrics about the lyrics for "Low" and "Not My Blood" off of Bloom & Breathe, as well as touching base on some older songs, the writing process, and my most hated song of all time.

I also gave some insight on how "Walls" came about originally:

I remember the day I came up with the chorus. Walls was written instrumentally, for the most part, before I even joined the band, so I would drive around with the basement demo on a burned CD-R and just try to sing melodies over it.

The chorus came to me when I was driving under the BQE getting ready to turn onto the freeway, and it was raining as well. I’m not sure why, but the demo was always called “Walls,” which inspired the central theme of the song. I took to a piano for the first verse to nail down a melody there, though, and it eventually shifted again when I started finalizing the lyrics.

A lot of people have lifted their own meaning out of this song, and because of this I consider it a great success lyrically.

You can check out the whole article here.

If the writing process for our lyrics interests you, or you were wondering about the origins of song titles, references, and so on, this one is for you. I'm thinking about featuring some more in-depth process pieces on lyrics moving forward right here on the blog, so stay tuned for that if you're a lyrics nerd like me.

Bloom & Breathe - 10/21/14

We're excited to announce that our debut full-length album, Bloom & Breathe, will be available on October 21st through Pure Noise Records. This record has been two years in the making and we're stoked to finally share it with all of you!

Kevin co-produced the album with Mike Watts (As Tall As Lions, The Dear Hunter) at Vudu Studios in Port Jefferson, NY, where we spent a month and a half tracking and mixing this album, which took us two years to write. We honestly put every ounce of ourselves into this project and couldn't be happier with the results of our labor of love.

Below, you'll find the album cover, designed by our very own Dan King, with photography by Mike Maroney. The art represents the album's central theme; the constant question of whether we're growing or withering away, and if we're truly living on our way to an inevitable end. You'll also find the tracklisting, assuring you that we have indeed made a full-length album of all new material and not something stupid like an EP ;).

To any of you who've been with us since the start, we cannot thank you enough for your patience and support as we worked to bring the best possible art we could have made into this world.  For any of you who've discovered us recently, including today, we hope this is the beginning of a long, continuing journey together.  We have so much more to show all of you, both leading up to and after this record is released, and we hope you continue to listen, enjoy, and share what we've created so that we may grow instead of wither.  Stay tuned!
